W2 and Akaash Ganga

W2 is working with The Lotus Flower Trust, a new charity formed specifically to help disadvantaged young people in the more remote areas of India. Our objective is to educate and support these children by building new, or renovating old, schools, homes and orphanages. We will give the children the opportunity to further their education to a standard only dreamt about before. For the homeless children and orphans, this means the chance of a home and of a better future where before, there was none.
Our principle aim
In 2010, our goal was to build a dormitory home on land provided free by the NGO just by the river. It will be called the "Akaashh Ganga Home for Destitute Girls". That means 'River of Stars', because each of the girls is a star. The home will nurture their bodies, minds and spirits; a simple building with dormitory bedrooms, inside sanitation, a basic kitchen and a communal room for dining, activities and prayers. The total build cost was estimated to be £25,000, utilising local builders and suppliers and our intention was to have it completed by October 2010. Extremely poor weather conditions and extensive flooding in the area during the last few months of 2010 have meant that the project will now be completed by summer 2011.
RESULT:
We raised nearly £40,000 in 2010 which will build the home, and provide additional facilities for the education and training of the girls
